Jenny's hat

Jenny and her new hat

1.      Every morning Jenny woke up early and, with a smile, she washed quickly and put her old straw hat on, to immediately go for her breakfast.

2.      Without wasting any time, she left home with a piece of bread and quickly ran into the woods behind to feed all the animals: birds, rabbits, deers, ants…

3.      She sat next to the old oak and made bread crumbs that she spread around so that the small squirrels came out to look for them as always. And then, Jenny went to play a while until it was time to go to school.

But that day one squirrel sneaked in her hat…

4.      When Jenny went to school she hung up her hat in the entry hanger and sat at her desk. The master began the lesson and suddenly shouted. The squirrel had chewed the hat  and had come out to explore, tired of being alone for so long.

5.      The teacher left the classroom hastily and all children rushed to the hangers to hunt the squirrel, but it escaped under the desks. The children jumped and shouted enthusiastically, when the squirrel ran away terrified by the window.

6.      When Jenny arrived home, she told her mother excitedly what had happened, wishing that nothing bad had happened to her small friend. And soon, very sad, she showed her battered hat.

7.      Her mother, with a smile, got it, left it on the kitchen table and took a round box from the cupboard. She came up to her saying: “Jenny, it was for your birthday tomorrow; but I think that you should open it now…”

8.      Jenny, impatiently, opened it in haste and right away her illuminated pretty blue eyes: it was a beautiful red hat in velvet with a long silk ribbon and a huge flower! Her mother interrupted her while she was trying it on: “…and with he other one, we will make a cottage for your squirrels, since they both like it so much”.

And that night, Jenny could hardly sleep thinking about her new hat and her little friend’s now home.
